06-2025 Downtown Panhandle in Hight rate 4 location for tourist in Panhandle, TX, USAJocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge Museum - Anahuac Leigh Ann Marsh-Bronson: The people are so kind and informative. We homeschool and they are always so sweet to take some time with my kids and add in some education to our trip. The trail is very nice I can even take a stroller on it with ease.
Double Bayou Park - Anahuac Lisa L: Peaceful. The fish were biting but we didnt take any home. Surprisingly no one was out there. We had the whole place to ourselves.
Fort Anahuac Park - Anahuac Matthew M: Absolutely gorgeous park! Stopped here on my way to San Antonio and debating sleeping for the night but decided to press on due to weather. Getting camping permit is super easy and theres tons of great spots. Highly recommend even if just for a quick visit
Jim Hogg Park - Rusk Taylor Horn: Beautiful park but could be so much more. Kinda sad that the city hasn’t kept up with it very much. The museum wasn’t open and doesn’t seem like it is very much. Also found the trail head and realized very quickly that it was overgrown and not walkable. We called the number that was listed on the website and the girl pretty much said “yeah there’s no longer trails”. Pretty sad because I heard there used to be great ones. Luckily as we were about to leave we noticed a car parked near the front entrance and what looked to be a trail. So we walked it and it was very lovely. Not sure if they are redoing the trail? Looked like lots of trees may have been cut down for it? The girl we spoke to obviously wasn’t sure but that’s okay. Nonetheless it was a very nice hike and I hope others find it before leaving. There’s so much history behind Jim Hogg and the park, they even have his cemetery there, so I hope one day it gets a little more of the love it deserves.
Texas State Railroad - Rusk Depot - Rusk Traveling Nana: Nice place. This was our turnaround place. It is a nice station. There is a nice gift store and place to buy food. The setting was lovely. There are plenty of picnic tables and a great lake.
Childress County Heritage Museum - Childress Beverly Taylor: Great museum of local and regional history with really cool stuff in it including a near-complete Linotype Press system. The curator on duty was fantastic and gave me a detailed tour of some of their most interesting and unique items in the collection. They have some wonderful gems tucked away in that former post office, and there are some incredible stories and people in the histories of small towns. If youre into Texas, railroad, oil/mineral, or military history this museum is well worth a part of your afternoon.
