  • What Clients Are Saying about Shoveler Pond (on GG)
5 /5 James Thomas: Great, short auto tour around a marsh land, lots of wildlife when I went!
5 /5 Dr. Stephanie Strayer: We did the auto loop in hopes of maybe seeing one alligator if we got lucky. Boy were we wrong! We saw about 40. The nature here is so beautiful and makes for great photo opportunities. It was relaxing and fun to drive around the loop. I wish we could have spent more time there and explored more areas, because what we saw was so unique and special.
4 /5 Samuel Smiley: Fun drive-by birding. A wooded area with walking paths/boardwalks around some smaller ponds called The Willows is good in season for warblers and some marsh birds. Larger wetlands include the larger Shovelers Pond have many water birds, gators and some raptors. One larger boardwalk (with parking) extends out over the water. Ranger station manned frequently by "RV volunteers". Worth a visit--the station that is. Good bathrooms at Station. Can also drive south to saltwater for shore birds, with occasional raptors, rails or even a burrowing owl if you are lucky.
5 /5 Billy Bob: We saw so many alligators and turtles it was unreal!
5 /5 Nicole Schott: Such a fun drive around and plenty of places to stop. I saw 10 different species of birds and at least 30 alligators. Would be a fun little free safari with children spotting gators. Very beautiful and scenic too.

Traveling Nana: Nice place. This was our turnaround place. It is a nice station. There is a nice gift store and place to buy food. The setting was lovely. There are plenty of picnic tables and a great lake.

Beverly Taylor: Great museum of local and regional history with really cool stuff in it including a near-complete Linotype Press system. The curator on duty was fantastic and gave me a detailed tour of some of their most interesting and unique items in the collection. They have some wonderful gems tucked away in that former post office, and there are some incredible stories and people in the histories of small towns. If youre into Texas, railroad, oil/mineral, or military history this museum is well worth a part of your afternoon.

Jeff Schmidt: Another museum we will need to return to when it is open. Unfortunately it was not open when we were passing by. But we stopped and took some photos of the building and area.

KDG: We were in a seventeen hour long drive from Denver, Colorado to Quitman, Texas and this place was absolutely magical for our three year old. It’s free of charge. The dinosaurs are made of a rubber latex material that flexes so you can move the tails and arms a bit. Grab some gas. Get some food at Steak and Shake or Texas Best. Use the restroom at the Shell. But if you have toddlers, do yourself a favor and let them have some time with the dinosaurs.

Donny Hacker: Five stars for the mural on the back of the museum since it was closed the day I came by (they are closed on Sundays). The mural is very nice though :)

Nando: Better than a “Free Beer” sign. The best thing since the wheel, it lets you know you’re home to the great Nation of Texas! Say goodbye to subpar BBQ and flavorless tacos and say hello to the most exquisite cuisine that is Texas. Say hello to good people, good food and the most amazing scenery there is to see in God’s land. Welcome Home.

Phillip Dyson: Dan Warren puts on a great long range 22 match. On the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. 5 benches shooting steel at 75, 100, 150, 200, & 250 yds. Challenging in the wind, but you can’t have more fun with a 22. I’m addicted and never miss a match.
