5 /5 Daniel Wade: The Davis Mountains Preserve is one of the most special and majestic places in Texas! It’s incredible that this area is protected by a nonprofit organization, allowing the public the privilege of visiting on select weekends throughout the year.
The Nature Conservancy, whose mission is "To conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends," truly exemplifies what a conservation nonprofit can achieve. The rugged yet fragile "Sky Island" at high altitude within these lands is a breathtaking sight.
We owe this privilege to the dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve this natural beauty. I highly recommend camping here before hitting the trail, as it significantly enhanced our experience.
Here are my notes on summiting Baldy Peak:
The trail is approximately 8.1 miles long with 2,100 feet of elevation gain. It was absolutely amazing, taking us to the rooftop of one of Texas most epic peaks. The view from the top is awe-inspiring. For summer hikes, I highly recommend starting no later than 7 or 7:30 a.m. The short section to Baldy Peak involves a class 2 scramble with solid foot and handholds for the technical parts. Be sure to bring more water than you think you think youll need!
