South Llano River State Park - Junction (TX)

5 /5 Amanda Mueller: Great park!!! Several different bird blinds in varied locations provide birders with a chance to see a great variety of birds. There is a beautiful river with boating/swimming/tubing opportunities. Lots and lots of trails for hiking and biking, a campground with adequate bath houses with flush toilets and warm showers. Best of all the park is an international dark sky location, so please keep in mind ALL exterior lighting on your RV is unwelcome. Use red light flashlights at night to preserve your (and others) night vision. The sky is amazing, deep and starry with Milky Way painted across it! Plan for several days to really see all the hiking this park has to offer. The turkey roost area is open only 10:00am-3:00pm October-March and has the nicest swimming areas. Although you can get in the river near the park entrance anytime if you need to cool off after a hot hike. It’s beautiful country, well worth a several day visit!

5 /5 Renea McMasters: Electric sites: odd #s 1 - 11 are more secluded and private. The park is beautiful, and the river is great for floating and swimming. The trails are amazing, too. Also, the staff and volunteers are helpful and knowledgeable. I cant wait to come back!

5 /5 Kalia A.: This is one of my top three favorite state parks because it was so quiet which allowed for full relaxation. The trails are well kept and I appreciated being able to do some birdwatching because they have designated areas for this. Additionally the river adds another perk to the park, you can go tubing, fishing, swim, etc. As far as the staff members, overall everybody was nice during check-in but on the night that there was a cold front and hail storm I was seeking help and no one was to be found. The hosts were off duty, the ranger we asked for help at the front that was sitting in his truck was dismissive, and the operator didn’t answer. The good thing was that the park is about 15 minutes from the nearby town so I was able to get help there but in a case of emergency, I think somebody should be accessible. Overall, I really love the park. The sites good but beware of the cacti! Depending on which site you select, you may have more or less room for tents in the grassy area. I recommended the sites in the 40s for larger groups. Go to the observatory if you can, the hike is worth the beautiful view! Oh also there’s plethora of animals! On this trip I saw deer, a roadrunner, a hog, armadillos, canaries, and hummingbirds.

5 /5 Lisa Ferraioli: Great State Park! We went late afternoon and spent a couple of hours here, great nature trails and plenty of nature to spot. Only wish we had went earlier in the day and we could have done a few more trails, we will definitely revisit next year and spend a bit longer!

The crystal-clear, spring-fed South Llano River is great for tubing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. The riverbanks are full of wildlife, making it a great place for nature lovers too. They also offer campsites, so you can extend your stay and enjoy the peaceful surroundings even longer.
