1 /5 Amy W: Please note before I start this review that I have thought, prayed, and waited a couple years before writing this. I have written the pastor as well, requesting a change of policy but with no success. I cannot be silent. We were invited by friends a few years ago. My two, well-behaved teenaged daughters visited their AWANA program and wanted to join. The AWANA program they had been involved in was discontinued. I wrote the check and then received correspondence that they would not be able to join because their parents were not regular attenders. They were professing Christians and would have embraced discipleship. As a Christian who was discipled at a church in high school where my parents did not attend, I find this policy abhorrent. This church boasts of its 10% giving to missions yet turns away teenagers at its front door. I could understand if they were young children and there were not enough volunteers for safety reasons. This was not the case. Plus, no one asked me if I would be able to volunteer if there was such a need. The ironic thing is that I used to volunteer as an AWANA leader at another church for several of the kids at this church who used to go there. I have never turned away a kid in all the years I volunteered in the AWANA program. I do not know of any AWANA program for teenagers that is overflowing. That is the age where a lot of kids start moving away from church. To turn away teenagers, open to learning and discipleship at church is despicable. One of the objectives of AWANA is to reach out to your community and make disciples. One of the requirements for the students in AWANA is to invite friends. If you go to this church, you need to address this issue. Otherwise, it looks like its a lot easier for you to write a check for missions rather than serve your own community.
