1 /5 Craig Wood: My daughter is at college in Clarendon, 5 hours from where we live, and two weeks ago her car had a crank and no start issue. Being so far away, I called Floyd’s, since they’re the only game in town and had them tow the car to diagnose it. After having the car a day, they told me that the timing belt broke and the engine was bad. I got a trailer and drove 5 hours to get the car. On a OHC engine, you can see the camshaft through the oil fill cap. I removed the cap and cranked the car only to find the cam spinning, which means the timing belt isn’t broken. This is something even the most basic mechanic should be able to figure out.
It turns out that the car had an issue with ethanol gas and was simply flooded. I held the gas pedal to the floor which puts it in clear flood mode, and the car started in about 10 seconds and has been running fine since. These leaves two options. The “tech” at Floyd’s is either extremely incompetent, or they’re extremely dishonest. Way to help a 20 year old girl in college out.
