5 /5 Jackie Mansour: We took our kids here thinking it would be a cute place to go for the morning to see some fun dinosaur stuff. It ended up being way more than that! We loved seeing the dinosaurs outside and digging for the fossils in the sand. Inside, they boys spent time cooling off watching the dinosaur battles and playing with some dinosaur toys. We were so surprised by the dioramas as well and my boys loved seeing all the animals and searching for the hidden Dino eggs! The fine art exhibit with beautiful paintings and treasures from Spain was unexpected and beautiful to meander through. What we expected to be a short visit ended up being almost 2 hours and we loved every minute!

5 /5 Alexis Duda: My best friend and I were going to visit the river in Bandera city, when it began to rain. We had passed the sign for Bandera Natural History Museum, and decided to check it out instead. Its decorated with a bunch of cute dinosaurs outside, but we didnt get to mosey around the outdoor trails due to the weather. When we entered, we were warmly greeted by the staff. We were given a curator guided tour of the Spanish American art, and then explored the taxidermy dioramas. There are so many wonderful finds here. The staff was so kind, and in fact offered me to use their wheelchair; everything was accessible... Thank you for the wonderful conversations and for sharing your knowledge, Lisa.

5 /5 Ethan Lindstrom: Great museum, lots of animals on display, with large dinosaur statues outside, along with a fun fossil digging area. The New Spain art exhibit is very interesting, with some unique pieces.

5 /5 Mark G: Great value. Admission wasn’t bad, and Groupon made it better. Staff is extremely friendly. Both museums are very elaborate for their size. The outside displays were so fun. Kids loved it.

Biker Rallies of Texas - Bandera

Jamie Tatum: My group and I love these rallies! The location is awesome, always a great music lineup, lots of games and contests, and good variety of vendors and the staff is super friendly and helpful. We attend both spring and fall rallies. Thunder in the Hill Country is coming up in March and were already booked again! Highly recommended.

Bastrop State Park - Bastrop

ArcesAdventures: Bastrop State Park, located about 30 miles east of Austin, is a beautiful and peaceful retreat in the unique Lost Pines ecosystem. The park is spacious and scenic, with over 6,600 acres of pine forest, trails, and wildlife. We stayed at Site 77 and had a great time — the site was clean, quiet, and conveniently located. The seasonal swimming pool was a great way to cool off, just note that it requires a separate reservation. Overall, a great spot for camping, hiking, and relaxing in nature!

McKinney Roughs Nature Park - Cedar Creek

Morgan Whitney: We had a good time at this park with the exception of getting lost and a very negative interaction with someone working for the Harry Potter exhibition. The getting lost part was our fault for reading the maps wrong, but we inadvertently hiked 5 miles with 3 kids and through a series of misreading the maps took the hardest trails through the zip line course, all the while thinking we were heading back to the parking lot but in reality getting further away. The spot where the pine ridge trails branches off to go down in the valley that people zip line above was misleading and the signs were not very clear. We thought we were on pine ridge heading west, but actually were on pine ridge heading south. I had a 7, 4.5, and 1.5yo with me. The baby was strapped to my back which made it much harder. We kept checking our google maps trying to figure out where to go because the kids were exhausted. We passed all of the zip lines and finally came out by the trails being used for the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest exhibit. Those were the trails that seemed to be the most direct route back to the visitors center. We passed a man on a golf cart who saw us looking obviously lost and discussing directions but he waved and offered no help. We kept walking through the Forbidden Forest section, not touching anything but trying to find where it reconnected with the trails back to the visitor center parking lot. The whole area was walled off with large metal panels covered in black tarp. When we got closer to where the paths connect, we got worried it would be walled off, so when we found a spot where the walls had enough space for us to slip through, we took it. Not 5 minutes later, another man came riding up in a gator and I thought, “hallelujah, someone can help us figure out what to do.” He immediately launched into accusing us of stealing from the exhibit, saying he would follow us to our car and take a picture of our plates and of us, then didn’t believe us that we were lost or that we were parked so far away. It took several minutes to convince him that we were genuinely lost and couldn’t have stolen something because we were juggling 3 kids and too tired to do anything but trudge back to the car. After he finally believed us, he took us to the picnic tables they had for guests and gave us water then came back with a golf cart he could carry us all on back to the parking lot. He explained people have been coming and stealing right and left, so I understand the impulse to not believe us, but he said most of the thieves are young couples in their mid-20s, not middle aged people pushing 40 with a gaggle of kids. In the stress of being told the cops were going to be called on us, my husband forgot his walking stick with his sweatshirt tied on it. I won’t say I wouldn’t come back because it was a beautiful park and under different circumstances we would have had a great time, but I felt the trails should have been better marked and I’m in no rush to hike it again with kids. Thank God we went in December when it was cool enough to be bearable

Jesse Thompson-Cooper: Cute walking trail with life size Dino’s and a little scavenger hunt along the path. My girls really enjoyed seeing the real sizes of the dinosaurs they had been reading about. Each dinosaur had a plaque with information as well. And there was a nice gift shop, with clean restrooms and picnic tables with playgrounds outside. . It was a great stop between Houston and Austin to break up the drive and wear out the kids.

Alyssa: Great museum with a combination of a diverse Texas-centered permanent collection on display plus a temporary community project (made of recycled material) and out of state visiting-artist exhibition (Christopher Randall). Staff is really enthusiastic and kind plus it has great AC perfect for sweaty days. House is beautiful and we’ll kept. If this is a planned visit, bring a book or two because there is a little library off the parking lot.
