5 /5 Mahailey Oliver: We didn’t spend a whole lot of time at the north unit, but on our first day of camping at the south unit we came here for a swim knowing that it would be raining the rest of the weekend. There is also tent-camping at this unit. It was relatively empty when we visited—we had the lake to ourselves for our swim. We appreciated the foot-washing spigot nearby to clean the red clay and rocks off our feet. Very scenic.

4 /5 Amy M: Camped here on a Saturday night and had an overall pleasant experience. The park and lake make a fantastic little getaway from DFW. We stayed in the North section, site #9. The site itself was huge with plenty of space and water on site. All the other sites looked just as roomy. Our site had a table, trash hook, water, and a fire pit. The bathroom was decent and has firewood for sale next to it. There are 4 kayaks for rent from a self-service kiosk with a launch site nearby. All the staff we encountered were super friendly and welcoming (were POC, so this is important for us)!! Well definitely be coming back to swim the lake in the summer! A few negatives but not deal breakers: -Fire pit was full of ash -no running water inside bathroom but there is a spigot right outside and at each site -the park is a bit noisy-we heard planes(airport nearby) and cars throughout the night -fishing pier near the sites was closed. *I included pictures of our site, North #9, and one of another site we liked, North #6

5 /5 Mandy Shannon: Love it here, quiet, peaceful and beautiful. Lots of wildlife to watch, big views of expansive skies! Lots of learning opportunities, historic buildings and miles of trails to explore.

5 /5 Ricardo Olivo: First time visiting and it was a great time. The park is split into two parts. They have a hike that is 9 miles one way so the loop is 18 miles FYI. The park is pretty clean not a lot of litter. Water at lake is amazingly clear! Rumbling springs is a trail hike must! Not very long but there are two springs that feed the creek and quarry lake.

Kevin S: Nice hike along the edge of the lake since the water level is down. It is dog friendly. There are restrooms and showers. There are hook ups for RVs including area for dumping. Each camp spot has a bbq pit and picnic table.

Sandy Creek Park - Jasper

Julia Vang: Gorgeous park with a dog friendly walking trail next to a running creek. Theres also an impressive basketball court with a shade structure and fans. The area around the park is also beautifully paved and well kept. Definitely a gem.

Limpia Creek Vista - Fort Davis

David Leet: A wonderful trail, and trails are in short supply in Texas, because most land is privately owned. As everyone else says here, take water, as there is none. A liter a day should get you by; water packs are available to buy. People can tent camp there, too, and will enjoy the night sky. It’s a five mile loop, but there are elevation changes, with the viewpoint the highest point.

Cassidy Lackey: Got into the march ‘25 weekend. Long, rough drive to the base of Mt Livermore. Glad I had a high clearance 4x4. The hike to Baldy peak was awesome but incredibly windy at the peak. Glad I did it! The people here were super friendly and helpful.

University of Texas McDonald Observatory - Fort Davis

Bradford Chase: This is a great visit if you have an afternoon and evening to be in the area. I made reservations a week prior for a guided tour, a solar viewing, and the evening Star Party. I showed up at 12:30 pm and the Solar Viewing started at 1pm and lasted about 45min. It included a great presentation about the sun and included live feeds from their solar telescope with lots of great information. Very cool! At 2:00 pm the guided tour starts with a brief overview of what to expect and then a trip up to the two biggest telescopes they have with a detailed discussion of how they work and how they are used. They do not have any daytime viewing but the tour was excellent. The entire tour lasted about 2 hours. There is a 4 hour break before the Star Party starts. Sign in between 8:30-9 and the program starts at dark around 9:30 this time of year. We had some clouds come in but we did get a little time on the telescopes and then went inside for a “make up” presentation that show slides of what we were supposed to see. Even missing out on a full 2 hours of telescopes the program was fantastic. The staff is great and their passion shows for what they do.
