Houston Museum of African American Culture - Houston JeAnna Redd: Got here an hour before closing. Eek! Ms. Theresa greeted us so warm and kindly. She explained the layout, artist on display, and the activity upstairs. We had a really nice time.
It’s always free, but worth donations.
Burke Crenshaw Park - Pasadena Angela Thandolwenkosi: Burke Crenshaw Park is a great spot for families, joggers, and anyone looking to enjoy a peaceful outdoor space in Pasadena. The walking trail is nicely paved and loops around a scenic lake, making it ideal for walking, jogging, or just taking in some fresh air. It’s well-lit, which is a plus for early morning or evening walks. One of the highlights is the fishing area, thanks to regular stocking, it’s a popular place for casual fishing, especially for kids. The park also has multiple playgrounds, picnic tables, and open fields that are perfect for family outings, sports, or weekend hangouts. What makes this park stand out is its accessibility. It includes a pavilion, an all-inclusive playground, and the Verne Cox Adaptive Recreation Center, showing a commitment to making the space welcoming for everyone. Overall, it’s a clean, well, kept park with something for all ages, great for both quiet solo time and fun group activities.
Strawberry Park - Pasadena Joseph T Flores: Great big park but I can never catch the water park open on the weekends but my son loves it and theres always kids there my sons age
Sylvan Beach Park - La Porte Esther O: update: 5/21, both sides of the beach are now open. the pier is still damaged and closed off.
I visited here 5/14/25. As of right now:
• The right side of the beach is closed off but the picnic tables are open to sit at. This side of the beach is nice if you want quiet. I sat at a picnic table, shaded, and read a book with nothing but the sound of the waves and seagulls in my ear.
• The pier is damaged and thus, closed.
• The left side of the beach is open. The sandy area is pretty small but you if you can find a spot, you can place a beach blanket or chair and relax or swim. I didn’t get in the water so i can’t speak of the temperature or depth. There are shaded and unshaded picnic tables on this side as well.
• You can fish from the sidewalk on either side of the pier.
Overall, a nice place to get away and relax and/or swim. I like it here. bathrooms are clean too quick is a rare plus.
San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site - La Porte Joe B: The battleground was a fun time. We stopped here and ran around the park seeing many birds, turtles, and other things. The actual museum was closed during our visit, however we could still walk around the outside and the rest of the park. They are currently doing some construction/updating to part of the park, so there should be some extra things to view in the coming months.
I assume this might be from the lack of being "open" but the bathroom, which is open without a door, was accompanied by a massive wolf spider roughly the size of an adults fist and large frog in the paper towel dispenser where the towels should be. Anyhow, the battleground is very scenic and beautiful, just keep your eyes open on the bathrooms if you use them.
Baytown Historical Museum - Baytown Lucy Holmes: The door was open, and we walked in, starting to look around when a lady greates us and said the museum was closed due to a meeting. No signs posted and door open. However, the museum had lots of history! I explained that we were traveling to see museums, and if you are not open, post it. Some people like us drive hours to read about the history. She advised that all locals knew the hours were changed.
