1 /5 Tara West: Was very disappointed at the Uptown Cafe in Blanco today. One reason we went was because Celiac Disease forces me to be gluten free, and someone in a San Antonio GF group recommended this place. I was excited, because we live nearby. First off, not a big selection. Nothing marked on the menu, though the website said most food can be made GF. I told the waitress I had to be GF and my husband didnt, but we wanted two gluten free meals, so we could share. When she told us the crab cakes appetizer were gluten free and could be made into a meal, my husband ordered them as his entree. I asked her to go back and verify the crab cake ingredients, because I had a hard time believing they were gluten free. She returned with our meals and set the plate in front of my husband telling him theres gluten Ritz crackers in the cakes. Okay, so I guess we werent sharing. She should have asked if we wanted something else instead of bringing us gluten. Also, he only got two small cakes, an appetizer. When I told her, "I thought you said it could be turned into a meal," she answered that some people eat the appetizer as a meal. It was a late lunch, and I was famished, so I ate my Cobb salad, though the menu said it came with egg and avocado, and it didnt. It was okay in flavor. I only tasted oil in the vinegarrette dressing, no vinegar. Husband ate his cakes and part of my salad. We wont be back. The staff was welcoming and the restaurant itself was beautiful with historic charm. I really wanted to like this place and was hoping for a new regular restaurant. Thats white cheese in the photo, not egg.
