5 /5 Greg Squyres: We are on a cross-country trip from the east coast back home to California. Our overnight stop tonight is in the charming Texas city of Marshall, home of the Wonderland of Lights. After settling into our hotel room, we checked Google Maps for a good place to eat. Pic-N-Pay Texas Style Cookin stood out above the rest so we quickly left the hotel and headed for the restaurant. We arrived at the end of their business day and were going to take our food to go, but the people running the place (I assume they were the owners) welcomed us like we were old friends and persuaded us, by their friendliness, to stay and dine in their restaurant. My wife ordered a chili dog with onion rings and I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries. While we waited for our order to arrive at our table, we looked around at the interesting memorabilia decorating the walls and ceiling. Hanging from the ceiling were football helmets from various colleges, and the walls were covered with vintage sports pictures and keepsakes. Within a few minutes the nice lady who took our order came with our meal and introduced herself as Debbie. She made sure we had everything we needed (ketchup for the fries, ranch dressing for the onion rings, etc.) and checked back with us throughout our meal to make sure all was well. It was! My wife reported that her chili cheese dog was delicious (she loves chili!) and the onion rings were great as well - sweet and satisfying. My burger was a thing of beauty. The thick, juicy beef patty was so large that it protruded past the bun by about an inch. The lettuce on the burger was fresh and crisp and the tomato was ripe and flavorful. The bacon was thick-sliced and crispy, just the way I like it. I only got the single burger and I did well to finish it. Its impressively big! But its not just pretty to look at, it tastes great, too. Unlike corporate-owned fast food mass produced burgers, this burger was crafted with care. Halfway through our meal the owner/cook came out to chat with us for a few minutes to get to know us. These people obviously care about their business, care about the food they serve, and care about people. My advice to those who want to try this place is to come earlier in the day than we did for the best selection. Their signature entrees may run out toward the end of the day. But if their entree selection is low, you cant go wrong with their bacon cheeseburger hot off the grill. Take my word for it! Wonderful place - wonderful people!
