2 /5 R Q: I thought long and hard about posting my experience with The Watershed. I randomly came across this church in search of community since I was new to the city. The church was overall friendly but I did notice there were some very standoffish, disingenuous people. I also noticed that certain personalities/individuals were not favored in the church which made me feel a little uncomfortable. Nicole Castillo came across as disingenuous and inconsiderate although initially presenting as kind. Castillo did not include me in a church meetup and has made passive comments eluding to the lack of diversity in the church (which came across as off-putting and awkward). This was definitely disappointing as you’d think religious/spiritual church folk would be more sincere/genuine.
As a person of color, I noticed that the church was majority one race. This is important because diversity is necessary for inclusion. Houston and the surrounding parts are highly diverse/versatile so its concerning to see a lack of diversity especially in a church when church is so common regardless of race. This ultimately contributed to my experience as I was not included or considered at times. I was not extended an invitation even as a new comer. I went to the church maybe 3-4 times. When I was absent from church, essentially no one checked on me for wellness. My experience was disappointing but I am relieved to know that the almighty sees all! I would not recommend this church if you are a person of color or if you are looking for more diversity and inclusion.
