Housed in the beautifully preserved Old Fayette County Jail, this museum is a moving tribute to the men and women who have served Texas and the nation, from the days of the Texas Revolution to the present day. The building itself is a piece of history, and stepping inside feels like traveling back in time.
The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, featuring fascinating artifacts, uniforms, and stories of legendary figures like Audie Murphy and Chris Kyle, as well as honoring local heroes, law enforcement, firefighters, and first responders. One of the highlights is being able to walk into an original jail cell—a hit with both kids and adults! The museum also houses the Bob Lain Memorial Library, an impressive collection of military history books that adds even more depth to the experience.
What truly sets this museum apart is the passion and knowledge of the volunteer staff. Our docent, Charlie, was incredibly friendly and engaging, sharing personal stories and historical insights that brought the exhibits to life. The pride in La Grange’s history is evident in every detail, and the free admission (with donations encouraged) makes this a must-visit for families and history buffs alike.
