East Texas Arboretum - Athens Rachel Paredes: We absolutely loved coming here on our camping trip. Our favorite parts were the old home, the Veterans Memorial, and a walk in the woods. Staff were super friendly and offered suggestions.
Land of Lights Christmas Park - Athens Sarah Evans: We had a great time here. Its a great place to bring the kids during the holidays. I will say that it had some pretty steep inclines, but all types of cars were going up the inclines with no issues. They have hot cocoa and snacks for an extra charge. It was $35 cash/ $40 per car in 2025. Theres lots of collectibles and its very nostalgic. Gave 4 stars because its a bit pricey.
McAllen Nature Center - McAllen Reuben Reyes: Nice natural nature park with winding trails and overgrown trees. They have three sets of trails that intersect and weave through thick vegetation of mesquite, cactus, and other south Texas brush. You will see and hear a good mix of birds here. I saw many types of lizards scurrying across the paths. I also saw several bunnies. Nice place to walk and relax. They have picnic tables, benches, water fountains, and restrooms.
Archer Park - McAllen Cloud Alexxis (Aj): Great park. Love the hotel in front. Thereās food trucks that are really great next to it.
McAllen Heritage Center - McAllen Hannah King: A great little museum with a cool little gift shop, if you are looking for stickers, ornaments, shirts, magnets or other McAllen souvenirs this is a great place to visit. While here take a look at the museum also which is also very informative of the area.
Firemens Park - McAllen Joni Lemieux: Paths around the park are very walkable. You will be greeted by ducks, many ducks. It was closed when I was there, but I imagine it is packed during the summer with families.
Zinnia Park - McAllen Arcelia Caudle: Beautiful sunsets at this park I love how clean it is, pet friendly and familys all gathering doing BBQ I stayed till 10:30 pm and the water still going not sure why people were leaving at that time I like how family friendly is.
Quinta Mazatlan - McAllen Dennise Sanchez: This place is so adorable and we didnāt even knew it was there until we got the opportunity to participate in this amazing event they do every year called Monarch Fest. We were glad that we were part of the vendors this year. Itās a beautiful place to all the family to enjoy. The house is full of history, Iām sharing a photo of the original owners face sculpted in a square of the front door. The the original wood on ceilings, the floor, the gardens and plants, the bird singingā¦ it feels like you are in another place and era. We were in our booth and we saw a small snake crossing in front of people from one side to the other. I really want to thank the people who work preserving and taking care of this place Definitely you must visit this place and enjoy the different activities they have in their calendar.
