1 /5 Nkem NK Ujuagu: I was happy with Myias service, until the very end. Prior to this appointment, I had 2 appointments with Myia for a silk press and hair coloring which I was really happy with. This third appointment was for the install of a partial sew in, an amino acid treatment, and coloring of the extensions. Before the appointment I confirmed the pricing based on the list of services and the prices she advertised. During the appointment, I noticed the two bundles of extensions were different colors. She also attempted several times to try to upsell me on eyebrow and wig services I didnt ask for. Additionally, Myia didnt seem experienced in the sew in service she provided and seemed unsure of where to place the extensions. Myia at no point brought up costs until the end of the appointment at which she told me the total cost of the appointment would be $1100 ($500 for the partial sew in, $400 to dye the bundles, $200 for the amino acid treatment). I asked for a break down of costs because I realized she was price gouging and inflating the costs of some of the services way above the market rate, especially in Temple. I have gotten these same services in NYC and CA and have never paid such amounts. I told her these prices dont match her site and she said that she changed pricing and gave other poor excuses that didnt justify the cost. She eventually lowered the cost, but I still paid $850 which is still way too high of a cost for the service. I felt ripped off and taken advantage of. I wouldnt recommend her services as Myia came off as dishonest and greedy.
Edit: Myias misrepresented the truth in her response. She never mentioned her prices were a base rangeācosts were only discussed at the end of my appointment. When I asked for a breakdown of the $1100 bill at the end of the extension appointment, she vaguely said prices had "changed" without prior notice, making the increased cost feel arbitrary. Her Styleseat listed a partial sew-in at $350, with no mention of charging $150 per line. At the end of the appointment she said that the other stylist in the salon is charging that much, however I signed up for Myias services not this stylist who is working with microlinks and offering different services. She had multiple chances to clarify but didnāt, denying me the choice to proceed with full information. Itās unacceptable to expect clients to assume prices might be different for them without clear communication. Additionally, the standard costs for a full head sew in with most Black salons and stylists is around $200-250, but I was fine paying her higher price since I was happy with the work she had done previously. However $500 for a sew in is obscene, given that the salon is not high end and Myia is not a high end stylist.
I also asked what extensions to buy, and she gave no specific guidance. Mid extension appointment, she had to ask another stylist what hair she uses with her clients and suddenly required a different typeāanother failure to communicate. She charged $400 to color two bundles, yet they didnāt match. The appointment lasted 7 hours 9:30 - 4:30 (not 11). It seemed like Myias was lacking experience when it came to extensions.
Her response only confirms her dishonesty, lack of transparency, and abhorrent customer service. I thought she did an amazing job with my silk press and color, but my experience with Myia during the extension appointment and her response to my feedback completely overshadowed the rest of my experience. I have spent $1200 with Myia between 3 appointments. Its incredibly that she conducted business in this shady of a manner. I hope she can learn from this and in the future treat her customers with more respect, not discredit and blame them, and take full accountability for her actions.
