5 /5 Phil R: We visited for two days early April a few days after the snow to hike the various trails. An amazing park with stunning vistas, beautiful canyons, frequent bison encounters, and an unexpected black-tailed prarie dog area. Because of the snow melt, the flowering plants were in abundance, which made each trail unique and very pretty.
The eagle point trail was an easy walk of about two miles each way with a nice picnic area by the lake.
The lower north prong trail was an easy walk with some interesting geology, many wildflowers, and amazing vistas.
The Haynes ridge overlook trail was somewhat more challenging and worth the effort.
The canyon rim trail was very easy walking and the bison group (bulls, cows, and calves) was an unexpected bonus watch from afar.
Over two days, we saw several bison groups, some single bison out on their own munching on the new growth, and loved the antics of the prarie dogs (and their resident roadrunner)
The parks staff were great, and made sure we were really ok as we headed back to our car after a day of hiking in the heat. Glad we came in April. Im sure in June the heat, especially in the canyon floor, would make the trails extra challenging.
