Pecan Street Social - Austin Larry Shoemaker: Pecan Street Social just reopened on 6th street in Austin after getting new carpets, New Tables, and new Multiple Flat Screens to show games (And have tournaments in the future I would guess). They also just installed the Atlas system. So there were major improvements to large parts of the poker room.
To me, who likes more of an antique feel, the room itself has a good history to it and a real personality. There are not many old buildings in Austin that feel like they have a history, so an establishment like Pecan Street stands out compared to the rest of the poker rooms in Austin.
It is a really "cozy" room with a home game feel. I feel a bit anonymous when I go to the large poker rooms. It is not their fault. They are successful, large poker rooms with hundreds of people going through each day. I am a pretty quiet guy, who just likes to play poker. Showing up to a poker room and receiving a smile and a greeting by name goes a long way.
Going to Pecan Street Social is a bit like going to the Bar Cheers in the old TV show from the 80s. Everybody knows your name. And you have your regular characters at the table. Your Norms of the Poker World.
And there is an actual guy (not named Norm) who comes in after too many Beers off 6th street and shoves on the flop with 2nd pair. Without fail. Every Saturday. At least that was before the refurbishment. I kind of hope he got in rehab, but my bankroll wants him back at the table falling in love with his 2nd pair every Saturday Night.
The room is professionally run and the time rake is reasonable. They are offering market rate time rake for Austin.
Pecan Street is a lovely room with a unique feel to it, and a wonderful addition to have back on 6th Street. The refurbishment really improved the room. The dealers are good at their jobs and I look forward to watching their future success. Welcome back Pecan Street Social!
